This is the second time in less than a year that the Synod is being called into an emergency session. The recent deterioration in relations between civil authorities and the church, including assaults on churches and the faithful, as well as the tolerance/encouragement of ethnic schismatic movements has further strained relations between church and state. It is expected that the church may take a firmer stand against these provocations.
