UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova sent a letter to Patriarch Irinej of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) in which she asserted that the organisation is closely cooperating with UNMIK, authorities and all other individuals committed to safeguarding the important cultural heritage of humankind, in the preservation of mediaeval monuments in Kosovo-Metohija (KiM) which are part of world heritage.
In the letter which was also sent to the media, she used the chance to thank SPC for constant cooperation in the preservation of world heritage, especially within the frameworks of cooperation on previous and current projects under the auspices of the Antenna Office in Sarajevo as part of UNESCO’s Venice Office, adding that the realisation of these projects was made possible by generous contributions of a number of donors.
Responding to the letter which the SPC patriarch sent on September 15 with regard to the mediaeval monuments in KiM which have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the UNESCO director said that the organisation’s mission is embodied in assisting sustainable development of mutual understanding and peace through education, science, culture, communication and information.
In addition to this, UNESCO believes that the enormous potential of cultural heritage represents the engine of and means for achieving better understanding and closer social ties, Bokova said.
