On October 23, the Church prayerfully commemorates the invention of the honorable relics of the Holy Hierarch Philaret (Amfiteatrov), Metropolitan of Kyiv and Galicia (1994).
On this day, His Beatitude Volodymyr, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the cathedral church of St. Panteleimon’s monastery in Kyiv (Feofaniya).
Concelebrating to him were: Vicar Bishop of the Kyiv Metropolis, His Grace Seraphim and the clergy of the monastery.
At the age of 58 St Philaret was appointed Metropolitan of Kyiv and Galicia. 20 years lasted his service at the Kyivan Throne. During this period his remarkable features of a good shepherd and a wise mentor, a caring educator of youth, sensitive assistant to the poor and orphans, especially diligent in prayer for everyone, revealed themselves with a new power. He was engaged in redevelopment of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Significant place in the activities of Metropolitan Filaret was occupied by the seminaries of the diocese both in terms of educating of worthy pastors of the Church there, and of financial support of the students. He passed away to the Lord in 1857 and was buried in the Church of Exaltation of the Holy Cross of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The relics of the saint were found in 1994 and placed to the Far Caves.
