PRIŠTINA — For the first time since it was attacked and desecrated in 2004, the bells tolled from Priština’s church dedicated to St. Nicolas (Sv. Nikola).
The church, which has been undergoing reconstruction, yesterday marked its patron saint day.
This Orthodox Christian Serb church is now equipped with the most basic items thanks to the Dečani monastery monks.
In March 2004, ethnic Albanians attacked and desecrated the temple, completely destroying its iconostasis – that was made by the Debar craftsmen, one of the most valuable and artistically excellent works produced in the Debar School of woodcarving.
The attackers also destroyed the church’s silver cross, cast in the 19th century, and one of only three of its kind – the surviving two are now found in the SPC monasteries of Dečani, and Hilandar.
